Recap July Blog Post

As we wrap up our July Series: Conversation, Communication & Communion we discussed how to regain the lost art of conversation by unplugging from technology & reconnecting with those we love. We also discussed why it is important to take time to commune with each other whether it is sitting down talking or sitting in silence next to the ones we love. In this series we wanted to bring back the art of intimate meaningful conversations. Below are the links to recap our articles for the month.

The Artistry of Communion

When was the last time you commune with the people you love? No, I am not talking about taking communion at church but that is a great place to start. However, I am simply talking about exchanging intimate thoughts, feelings & dialogue with the people you love. In a fast paced world we rarely take the time to simply sit down, share & create intimate moments.

Communion is an important part of learning the meaning of intimacy beyond physical touch.
Communion teaches us how to connect on a soul to soul level without outside distractions. Communion does not have to be perceived as exchanging dialogue sometimes the silence between two people can create a perfect moment of intimacy.

Life can get busy but relishing in the company of those who are dear to us could be the most enjoyable feeling in the world. Human interactions can have the capacity to increase enjoyment, fulfillment and eliminate depression. If there is more positive results from communing then why do we do it less? Well I believe people commune less because they have become intimate with other things such as social media, computer games etc. Americans spend more time on their computers, phones and engaging in  TV more so than spending time reading or creating intimate moments with family & friends.

Here are three tips to establish the artistry of communion.

1) Cop A Squat: In the movie Pretty Woman I remember a scene where Julia Roberts character encourages Richard Gere's character to take a day off from work and enjoy life. In one of the scenes they were in the park where she told him to cop a squat. Cop a squat imply means sit down. Take some time to stop everything your doing & sit down with the people who matter the most.

2) Carve Out Time. Time is something we can never get back. Time with the people we love is never wasted so set a date or time to bring back intimacy in your important relationships.

3) Eat Together. The best way to commune & create intimacy is by eating your dinner meal together as a family or even with friends. This type of communion gives everyone time to share, laugh & enjoy the taste of their food.

Communing has the power to create intimacy, love & joy for everyone who participates in building long lasting relationships.

The Lost Art of Conversation

Somewhere lost in a timeless warp, where meaningful words use to be more appealing than texting or holding a conversation through the computer. Technology has made us lazy as we use social media and texting as a way to hold conversations when these things truly hinder the art of conversation.

I remember living in a world where you would talk on the porch to family and friends for hours savoring the moments. In this new millennium technology has handicapped us from learning how to evoke meaningful conversations. I believe social media has disabled our younger generation because they lose themselves in social media without becoming social within the world around them. The biggest question to ask is how can we get back to the beautiful art of conversation with a social media and text induced world?

The greatest way to tap back into the real world is log out from the virtual world. There should be a healthy balance of technology verses real life conversation. Real life conversations teaches us how to socialize with one another, it teaches us how to listen, pause and interpret someones words as well as body language. When we are holding conversations through text or social media we misconstrue what a person may say.

In order, for us to reconnect to realistic, meaningful & authentic relationships we have to be willing to unplug  from social media and become sociable with the world around us. When we evoke intimate one on one conversations we are more fulfilled and happy in our lives.

The art of conversation can be rekindled in this saturated age of technology by:

1) Unplugging. Taking a digital detox from social media.
2) Reconnect. Making time to reconnect back to real relationships before social media became your primary outlet.
3) Vacate. Get out the house & meet new people.
4) Off Button. Turn off your phone for an hour or so to live in the moment & be mindful of the present.
5) Live in the moment. We miss out on intimate connections with the people we love because we share every moment on social media. Take some time to savor the moment & keep your memories secrete without sharing everything on your social media sites.
